Honey bees!

Phil Breed is a beekeeper who loves to share what he has learned about the bee world. You will learn the anatomy of a honey bee, the role and responsibilities of a beekeeper, and the components of a beehive. You will also have interactive activities on the life a honeybee, bee communication, and an opportunity to observe an interactive colony. In addition, learn about the cohabitation of honey bees and indigenous bees and other pollinators.

Phil's first experience with bees was in his uncle's apiary in mid '70s.  Ever since, he has had an interest in apiculture. Phil and his wife, Donna, live on the east side of Union Grove State Park (south of Beresford, SD). Their goal is to have a self-sufficient apiary. Phil posts about their bees and experiences on his Facebook group Birdsong Bees. In addition to working on Master Beekeeper certification through UNL’s GPMB program, Phil is employed part-time as a beekeeping technician at Dordt University through a USDA grant.

LHAS Board Meeting begins at 6:00 PM with Phil’s program beginning at 7:00 PM.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Enjoy the evening!

Prairie Park World Migratory Bird Day!

Prairie Park activities, supporting designation of Sioux City as a bird-friendly community, begin at 9:00 AM and go until Noon. Binoculars, spotting scopes, and field guides will be available for use at Prairie Park. Prairie Park is accessible for visitors of all abilities.

Insects and their importance to migratory birds is the focus of this year’s World Migratory Bird Day. To celebrate this global campaign, families are invited to participate in some fun educational activities at Prairie Park. Join Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center Naturalist Kari Sandage at 10:00 AM for a bug hunt, learn about insects, and look for birds with experts from the Loess Hills Audubon Society.

Insects are essential sources of energy for many migratory bird species, not only during the breeding seasons but also during their extensive journeys. The loss and disturbance of insect populations at breeding sites and along avian migration routes threaten bird survival and well-being.

For more information regarding Prairie Park activities, please contact Randy Williams.

All LHAS outings are open to the public and offer an inviting way to begin birding and meet others with similar interests.

Storm Lake Surprises!

Because many of our wetlands are still dry, we will attempt to find shorebirds, waders and marsh species where the water is more permanent. Our leader for our January outing to the Waterman Creek area, Dana Seifer of Storm Lake, has agreed to lead us around this glacial lake to see its open water, beaches and associated marshes. He also knows of more obscure wetlands and temporary water that may also host these migrants.

Meet us at 7:00 AM at the Singing Hills Walmart parking lot, northwest corner (across from 4 Brothers restaurant) for carpooling and the 90-minute caravan to Storm Lake.

For more information call Bill at 712-574-3107 or billfhuser@gmail.com

March Marsh Madness at Ponca State Park

Join us for a traditional waterfowler’s experience – a trip to a blind for up close views and photo opportunities of migrating swans, geese, ducks and others. We have arranged for use of Ponca State Park’s wildlife blinds on their North Unit’s wetland.

Meet us at the Ponca State Park Resource Center at 3:30 PM SUNDAY, March 17. We will tour the Park and the riverfront for waterfowl, eagles and other migrants. Following that, we will guide you to the Park’s North Unit grasslands for pheasants, hawks and migrating waterfowl overhead. The riverfront there also gives us opportunities for viewing migrants.

Dress in warm clothing and footwear as we will enter the blind around 6:00 PM to await the arrival at the marsh of feeding or migrating waterfowl. Temperatures plummet as the sun goes down so prepare for temperatures well below those during the afternoon. (On this particular day, GREEN camo will be quite appropriate.)

A daily or seasonal park pass will be required on each car entering the park. Arrange for carpooling with others to avoid unnecessary expense. For more information call Bill at 712-574-3107 or billfhuser@gmail.com

Chili Social and Silent Auction Fundraiser

POSTPONED! Due to impending weather forecast for this weekend! A new date has not yet been determined.

Two for the price of one! Join Northwest Iowa Group of Sierra Club and Loess Hills Audubon for a joint venture on Saturday, February 10, at the First Unitarian Church (2508 Jackson). Visit with friends both old and new and enjoy your choice of over a dozen chilis.

This is Sierra Club's only fundraiser — donations from the door, beverage table, and the chili-to-go options support Northwest Iowa Group of Sierra Club's conservation and outreach efforts. Cash and checks are preferred, but we can process cards for a fee.

Loess Hills Audubon was graciously invited to participate and LHAS is conducting a silent auction fundraiser. Auction items will be on display and bids accepted during the chili social. Auction items are cash or check only, please.

Do you wish to contribute something for the auction? Items will be accepted at the LHAS January meeting, Thursday, January 4, 2024. Or, email Marla Kerr or Sharon Polifka to make other arrangements. Deadline for contributions is Saturday, January 6, 2024. The chilis will be served from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM in the church basement, but our doors will open at 3:30. Enjoy these happenings on the main level:

  • Learn more about our friends, the Loess Hills Audubon Society, and browse great finds offered in their silent auction fundraiser. There just might be something you can't live without, and you'll be supporting a good cause!

  • Live piano music by Terry Brooks

  • Contribute to "Change for Change", the church's effort to help our neighbors and community organizations.

  • Enjoy a slideshow of 2023 memories contributed by Sierra Club members and friends. (Have some photos you’d like to show off? Call/text 712.986.6210)

We'll keep our fingers crossed, but in case of bad weather, please use your own judgment as to your safety. If we decide to postpone, we'll do so as far in advance as we can.

LHAS Outing to Waterman Creek, O'Brien County, Iowa

  • Singing Hills Walmart Supercenter (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Winter birding is always challenging with bird populations at their annual low point and severe weather causing stressed birds to shelter and over-stressed birds to perish. As birders we try to offset such obstacles by birding sites with multiple habitats and a history of hosting many wintering birds.

Waterman Creek is one such area with the added advantage of having a history of rare winter visitors. Offering an open valley with flowing water and many Eastern Red Cedar trees, this valley provides food, water and shelter for wintering birds. The small blue berries of these cedar trees offer an abundant food supply to those species feeding on fruit (frugivores).

Our target birds include Cedar and Bohemian Waxwings, American Robins and Townsend’s Solitaires, Eastern and Mountain Bluebirds, Purple Finches, Rough-legged Hawks and Golden Eagles. In order to navigate the area and find these special birds, we have enlisted the leadership of area local Dana Siefer who has birded the area for several winters and found many of these birds. In fact, Dana was there birding when we last visited the site two years ago.

Birding at Waterman will be mostly from cars and at the roadsides. Meet our group at the Singing Hills Walmart (NW corner of parking lot) at 7:00 AM for the 82 mile drive to the Prairie Heritage Center near Peterson, north of Cherokee. Others wishing to join the group on site should meet us at the Prairie Heritage Center at 8:30 AM. Bring a picnic lunch and beverages to maximize time on the site, though we may choose a restaurant at the time. For more information call 712-574-3107 for Bill or billfhuser@gmail.com

Weather Change - LHAS Outing

With Saturday’s weather forecast calling for a 77% chance of rain, including thunderstorms, and Omaha’s forecast much the same, I believe it prudent to cancel tomorrow’s trip to Hitchcock Nature Center. Besides the inconvenience of the rain and the danger of lightning on the viewing tower, there is little chance there will be any movement of raptors in such conditions.

However, I still suggest that all willing and able meet at the prescribed time and place for some local birding, perhaps, surveying Graceland Cemetery for Crossbills or Bacon Creek for the elusive Limpkin. If rain hinders even these reduced plans, perhaps some coffee and comradery can fill the void.

Meet us at 8:00 AM, Saturday, the 23rd at the Singing Hills Walmart parking lot for this adventure. Look for us in the NW corner.

Big Sioux River Parks and Zales' Prairie Hills

The Plymouth County Conservation Board maintains several parks and river access points along the Big Sioux River north of Westfield and Akron, IA. These parks include riverine, riparian woodland and some managed grassland habitats. During our July outing we will introduce you to these sites as we search for the woodland and grassland birds that inhabit them. Our target birds will include both Black-billed and Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Willow Flycatchers, Bell’s Vireos and Northern Parulas. Birding at these sites is expected to be along the roadsides by car or foot.

Following stops at Doorenbos-Ford Wetlands, Boyd’s Bend, Big Sioux Park, River Bend Park and the Ron Wilmot River Access, we will proceed through the Broken Kettle Grasslands to search for Black-billed Cuckoos, Bobolinks, Grasshopper Sparrows and Loggerhead Shrikes. ‘The Grasslands’ are also home to Bison, butterflies and reptiles. Our visit here will, likewise, be roadside birding. Join us as we tour the Big Sioux River valley and ‘the Grasslands’ and study the landform, its botany and bird life.

Dotty and Bill Zales have graciously invited us to join them for lunch at their homestead, ‘Prairie Hills,’ around 11:00 AM.

We will meet at the public boat ramp at Chris Larsen Park on the Sioux City waterfront at 7:00 AM on Saturday, July 15 for the 20-minute drive to Akron, IA. Nebraska Sandhills with Loess Hills Audubon

Meet up with Chapter members in Valentine, NE on Friday, June 16, to join the group’s exploration of Sandhill prairie, lakes and bird life.

The Nebraska Sandhills are ancient sand dunes covered with an expansive prairie and dotted with marshes and lakes. With both of these rich habitats in close proximity, bird life abounds. Prairie species such as Long-billed Curlew, Marbled Godwit, Willet, Greater Prairie Chicken, Swainson’s Hawks, Burrowing Owls and Lark Buntings can be found. Waterfowl nest on or near the wetlands, which also host nesting grebes, rails, bitterns, night herons and wrens. Additionally, western counterparts of eastern species like Western Wood Pewee, Black-headed Grosbeak, Lazuli Bunting and others are possible.

We have 6 rooms reserved at the Harmony Inn, in Valentine for the nights of Friday and Saturday, June 16 & 17. Plans call for Friday travel, birding most of Saturday and return on Sunday. Additional rooms may be available if we act fast. To reserve a room call 402-376-3131 to have a room put under your name and on your credit card. Tell them you are part of the ‘Bill Huser group’ to receive the discounted rate of $124/night. Rooms are available on a first come first served basis. Birdathon! - Global Big Day - World Migratory Bird Day

World Migratory Bird Day (including Global Big Day) is officially celebrated on the second Saturday of May in the US.

LHAS has permission to access the newly acquired Little Sioux Scout Ranch for an outing and bird survey to celebrate the dates and this important acquisition to preserve the Loess Hills.

To obtain some baseline bird occurrence data for the site, LHAS will be both conducting its annual Birdathon fundraiser and participating in the Global Big Day on this busy Saturday. Global Big Day is organized by the National Audubon Society, The Cornell Lab and Birds Canada and gathers bird occurrence data much like the Christmas Bird Count for researchers across the continent.

Plan to join the group at the Singing Hills Walmart parking lot at 6:30 AM for our caravan to the site. There, we will break up into teams to cover the Camp’s habitats for migrating songbirds. Warbler and vireo migration should be at their peak, and their numbers may surprise us all. Join us for this important data gathering mission.

Be sure to pack a lunch and beverages for this outing!

Birding Adventures with Mark Haindfield

Mark Haindfield was employed with Woodbury County Conservation Board for 41 years while stationed at Snyder Bend Park. Commonly known as a Park Officer or Park Ranger, his official title then was District Resource Manager.

Mark completed training at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in 1975 and served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 24 years. Earlier, ornithology courses at Iowa State University added to his long-time appreciation for birds while his job kept him close to nature.

In the 1970’s, when Bald Eagle populations were beginning to improve, Mark assisted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in locating and recording eagle loafing and roosting sites. Weekly location maps of recorded sightings of these important sites in the Snyder Bend and Winnebago Bend areas were forwarded on to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Wildlife photography became his hobby. Carolyn Benne, a towering figure in local conservation and education, encouraged and assisted Mark in producing a slideshow program of his images in cooperation with our local Iowa Area Education Agency. His slideshow program was personally shown to many local clubs and organizations including the Loess Hills Audubon Society.

Later, for a 12 year stretch, a different hobby became his passion. Racing homing pigeons consumed his spare time where he learned bird nutrition; molting concepts; bird behavior; breeding strategies; and amazing feats of bird endurance and navigation.

After retiring and joining the Loess Hills Audubon Society, Mark again picked up his camera and wishes to share his more recent birding adventures with you. Be ready to enjoy video clips of bird behaviors; raptors battling for a meal; and rare species for our area, as well as images of very cooperative local bird species.

LHAS Board Meeting begins at 6:00 PM with Mark’s program beginning at 7:00 PM.

The Loess Hills Audubon Society exists to educate individuals and the public to enjoy and promote birding, to support ornithology and to be an advocate for wild areas and environmental issues. The Loess Hills Audubon Society is a chapter of the National Audubon Society.

Greater Prairie Chickens and the Buckskin Hills

Outing postponed to this date due to illness. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

“On frosty spring mornings, as the sun rises over the prairies, one may at times hear a singular, resonant, booming note, ‘boom-ah-b-o-o-m, boom-ah-b-o-o-m.’

So did famed ornithologist Dr. Frank M. Chapman once describe the love-song of the Greater Prairie Chicken.

More often heard by early ornithologists than our contemporary birding friends, these haunting sounds can still be heard without travelling to distant points in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Dakotas or Nebraska. On Saturday, April 22, members and guests of the Loess Hills Audubon Chapter will journey to the Buckskin Hills Wildlife Management Area (WMA) southwest of Newcastle, Nebraska to hear this boom-ah-b-o-o-m, which can travel for 2-3 miles, as well as their cackling notes which travel less distance. Observers will also see the intricate mating dance of the birds as they erect the feather tufts on their necks, raise and spread their tails, droop their wings, inflate their orange air-sacs and stomp their feet, rush at and strike their rivals. Each Spring, these males cavort on a prairie hilltop to attract the much more reserved females.

After this early morning show, we will also study the reservoir at the WMA, the pine plantations and the streamside woods and thickets for newly arriving songbirds. Our native sparrows, wrens, thrushes and perhaps our first warblers and vireos may show off in both song and movement. All in all, we expect to see 60 species or more.

Join the group for this adventure on Saturday, April 22, 2023 by meeting us at the NW corner of the Singing Hills Walmart parking lot at 6:00 AM to caravan to the Prairie Chicken lek. Those wishing to meet us there can expect us to arrive in Newcastle about 7:00 AM and may join our caravan as we pass through town on NE Hwy 12.

All LHAS outings are open to the public and offer an inviting way to begin birding and meet others with similar interests.
